Please be sure to read this every week as this is a great way to learn about what is going on at school with your child.

Your child will have a folder to take home EVERYDAY!!! Enclosed you will find the papers needed to complete, homework, and returned papers or notes. Please sign the homework sheet EACH NIGHT when your child has completed the homework.

Reading |
I want your child to LOVE to read!! In class, they will do a combination of whole group, literacy groups, phonics, and individual work. We will do small group about 2 times a week. Please listen to your child read the weekly story on Monday nights. Please have your child read at least 15 minutes every night! Research shows that children this age should read at least 15 minutes a day, at home, for vast reading progress. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE plan on reading EVERY NIGHT!!
The state goal for EVERY second grader is to be reading 90 words per minute with mastery in comprehension by the end of the school year. This is a high mountain to climb, but WE CAN DO IT if we work TOGETHER at home and at school.

Math |
Wylie schools use the Saxon Math series for math curriculum. We will follow the program closely; however, I will supplement other math materials, also. Students will have math homework on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Please be prepared to spend extra time on math facts as the year progresses. Your child will be proficient in all addition and subtraction problems by the end of the year. They will also have a good start on multiplication facts.

Your child will get to participate in "AR" this year. As soon as we have our computers up and going and we have have time to assess reading levels, I will send you more information.

Language |
Wylie uses the SHURLEY method in language classes to learn basic grammar. We will also have a daily language paper to work on editing and basic skills. Look for many types of writing this year as well.

Spelling |
We use a spelling program called Making Words. This is a research based program based on learning patterns and sounds for words instead of just memorizing and forgetting a list of words. On Monday in the newletter, you will receive some sample words for the pattern. Start practicing those words plus make words at home that go with the pattern. You really need to do this step at home! We will have already worked on alot of words in class on Monday so your child should be able to come up with a pretty good list. Again, on Tuesday, talk about the pattern. Think of more words as a family. Wednesday, you will get the real list of spelling words. These will be words that we have been working with and your child and his classmates have come up with the 22 spelling words for the test. On Wednesday, help your child with the spelling homeowork page. Thursday night, study the words for the word and dictation test on Friday.
Don't worry! You'll get the hang of it and your child will know a plethera spelling words by the end of the year!
