El Día de los muertos
"A man dies three times; once when he stops breathing, once when he is laid in the grave, and finally when he is forgotten."- Octavio Paz

One of the reasons for the Day of the Dead, is that beloved friends and family won’t be forgotten and lot to our lives. This is the aspect of the holiday that we focused on in class.

Students bring a photo of a loved one who has passed away or an item that reminds them of a loved one and shares it with the class by placing it on our ofrenda.

Here are some photos of what the students brought this year. It was a very moving event. The students were thoughtful and personal in their sharing.

Day of the Dead is 2 November.
Ofrendas
Ofrendas are tables set up in the living room of Mexican families during the week before the Day of the Dead. The ofrendas are decorated with candles, flowers, photos of deceased family members, some of the deceased favorite foods and drinks and things they enjoyed doing when they were alive.
"El Día de los muertos" Project Instructions
Day of the Dead is November 2 and is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries. We are going to study the cultural aspects of this day.

One of the reasons for the Day of the Dead, is that beloved friends and family won’t be forgotten and lost to our lives.

Students bring a photo of a loved one who has passed away or an item that reminds them of a loved one and share it with the class by placing it on our ofrenda (table of rememberence) along with a 3x5 card that explains in English why this person was special to them and why they chose the item to remember them by.

The students have been asked not to bring something valuable or irreplaceable. I’ve never had any thing stolen, but I don’t want to tempt anyone. If the item is of value, please take a photo or photo copy of it to bring. This is a daily grade.

Bring your item before 8:25 on the 2nd so we can put them out on the ofrenda for display all day. You can take them home after school on the 2nd.
