Class Information
  Mrs. Jennifer Rapstine

Newsletter
You will receive "Mrs. Rapstine's Corner" each Monday. This is a useful update for plans for the week, homework, menus, notices, etc....
Folders
Your child will have a folder to take home EVERYDAY!! Enclosed you will find the papers needed to complete homework and return papers or notes. Please initial the homework sheet EACH NIGHT when your child has completed the homework. Rewards will be given for signed folders.
Snacks and Water Bottles
Your child may keep a water bottle at his or her desk, if desired. It must be a "sports-type" closeable lid.
You may bring a small, healthy snack each day. Acceptable examples may include: pretzels, crackers, fruit, granola bars, PB & J etc..
Couple of other items...... Please do not send anything too messy.
Do not put the water bottles in your backpack!! Water damaged books will have to be paid for.

Also, we do not share snacks with our friends and neighbors in class. You will have to provide your own snack if you want a snack.
Reading
I want your child to LOVE to read!! In class, they will do a combination of whole group, literacy groups, phonics, and individual work. We will do small group about 2 times a week. Please listen to your child read the weekly story on Monday nights. Please have your child read at least 15 minutes every night! Research shows that children this age should read at least 15 minutes a day, at home, for vast reading progress. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE plan on reading EVERY NIGHT!!
The state goal for EVERY second grader is to be reading 90 words per minute with mastery in comprehension by the end of the school year. This is a high mountain to climb, but WE CAN DO IT if we work TOGETHER at home and at school.
Math
Wylie schools use the Saxon Math series for math curriculum. We will follow the program closely; however, I will supplement other math materials, also. Students will have math homework on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Students will have basic math fact practice almost every day! Please be prepared to spend extra time on math facts as the year progresses. Your child will be proficient in all addition and subtraction problems by the end of the year. They will also have a good start on multiplication facts.
Science
We will discuss a couple of science questions and vocabulary each day. We will use our science books for science units every 3 weeks.
Reading Counts
Your child will get to participate in "RC" this year. As soon as we have our computers up and going and we have time to assess reading levels, I will send you more information.
Lunch
Our lunch time is 11:59 - 12:29. If your child is bring his or her lunch, please make it kid friendly!! I would discourage microwaveable items. It cuts into their lunch time and they will have only limited assistance in using the microwave. Just remember....."kid friendly" lunches are best.
Library
Our regular library time will be on Friday from 11:00 to 11:30. We can always use library volunteers if you would like to join us. Mrs. Hyland will be contacting you if you fill out a volunteer form. Second grade students also have open check out available everyday after they have read and tested on their library books.
Homework
This is a general guide for homework expectations. This will include unfinished daily work, as needed. Make sure your folder is signed each night after completing homework.
MONDAY: Read assigned weekly story, aloud, to an adult. Math fact practice.
TUESDAY: Math (usually side B of Saxon) and math fact practice; read 15 minutes.
Wednesday: Spelling Assignment; read 15 minutes
Thursday: Math (usually side B) and fact practice; read 15 minutes
Friday: Usually no homework, unless you are the "Super Kid of the Week" or we are working on a special project.
Spelling
Our spelling curriculum is a combination of several research-based programs. We would like to focus on learning spelling patterns so that spelling is not just a memorization exercise. You will receive a spelling list on Monday that consists of 25 words. The first ten words will be on the spelling test at the end of the week. The other words are examples that follow the pattern that we are working on for that week. We will be working in a variety of ways to learn about that pattern and sounds. You can take the Monday list to study and make new words that fit the pattern. The first 10 from the Monday list will always be on the test and we will pick our other ten words from words that we worked with during the week. You will have an "official" test list on Wednesday evening. The test will be on Friday.
Time for Kids
Please send $4.45 for your child's subscription to Time for Kids. We will use this in social studies each week.
RIGHT CHOICE CLUB
I believe in a lot of praise and rewards for good behavior!! Please reward your child at home, also for super behavior. Our discipline chart (or THE RIGHT CHOICE CLUB) and consequences are:

White card - WAY TO GO! Keep this card and you are making great choices!
Green card - Warning card! Think about your actions.
Yellow card - 10 minutes off of recess (May be sitting out or walking laps.)
Purple card - 20 minutes off of recess (May be sitting out or walking laps.)
Red card - No recess; call parents and/or go to the office

*** Please see notes in the folder if problems arise. Your child will fill our a "refocus" paper if they move to the yellow card and beyond.
Language
Wylie uses the SHURLEY method in language classes to learn basic grammar. We will also have a daily language paper to work on editing and basic skills. Look for many types of writing this year as well.
Daily Social Studies
Your child will have 2 or 3 social studies questions to copy from the board each day in their spiral. On Friday, they will have a test on the weeks' questions. They can use their spirals on the test, so they need to copy the question and answers carefully. We will use our social studies books every 3 weeks.
Supplies
Please replace supplies as needed throughout the school year.
Time to Learn
School starts at 8:00 A.M.

Your child will have morning work on his or her desk that they need to begin at 8:00. If your child arrives at school early, they will go to the gym where they will be supervised. They are dismissed from the gym at 7:55. If your child eats breakfast at school, they will begin serving at 7:30.
